Facebook pushes to bridge language divide with new acquisition.#voicetechnology

Facebook on its push for mobile technology has acquired Mobile Technologies, the team behind mobile (iOS and android) voice translation app jibbigo.

According to reports on the appData website, Jibbigo is the number 28 highest grossing iOS travel application. Jibbigo is the worlds first speech-to-speech translator on a mobile phone, that runs online and offline, independent from the internet. Travelers around the world use this application (Jibbigo) to communicate in foreign countries. Health care workers overcome the language challenge in humanitarian missions around the world.

with 6,000 languages in the world, this technology can become very useful in the hands of the mighty Facebook company, which continues to drive the mobile push.

Facebook Director of Product management, Tom Stock confirmed the acquisition:

it has always been our mission to make the world more open and connected. although more than a billion people use Facebook around the world every month, were always looking for ways to help connect the rest of the world. #voicetechnology has become an increasingly important way for people to navigate mobile devices and the web.

Jibbigo also commented on the acquisition:
Mobile Technologies was founded in 2001 with the goal of breaking through language barriers to open up communication between the people of the world.

What does the future hold for Facebook with #voicetechnology and making the world an even more #xonnected place where languages are just nothing more than just languages. Will Facebook integrate this new acquisition or use it as a stand alone app. Imagine scrolling through ones time line using your voice?

  1. I think its going to take time for Facebook to include voice technology but eventually it will.

  2. Yes it will. But with the team and `buying power` facebook has, it could be sooner than we think.

  3. I personally think this is a great app since reading and scrolling on timelines is timeconsuming and sometimes boring. Facebook is a suitable platform for this voicetechnology as it is one of the biggest and simplest social medias to connect with friends, thus it will be greatly received by its users making facebook even more exciting and worthwhile.

  4. #voicetechnology would be cool, but will make us even lazier than what we already are.

  6. Lerato Thipe- yes I also think it was great of facebook to make the acquisition and they are the best platform to make the app work and it might be sooner than we think. Because we already have apps that are voice activated, i.e cars.
